I’m looking for a partner,
But the ‘right one’ is hard to find.
I want a partner who is consistent –
Someone who can always be counted on.
Someone who makes plans and meets them,
But also allows for change, as well.
A partner who shares their dreams with me
And eagerly asks for mine.
And wants to work together to accomplish them,
Turning our failures into fertilizer,
And sharing the rewards we reap with the world.
A partner who challenges me
And asks me to challenge them;
A partner who offers thoughtful critiques and is open to accepting the same,
But always issues them with consideration and love.
A partner who desires to go on blind adventures,
Yet always does a bit of illuminating research in advance.
A partner who is willing to walk by my side when walking is all I can do,
Even though they would prefer to run ahead, instead.
A partner who’s always there when I need them
Because that’s where they want to be,
Even though they have better things to do.
That’s the partner I want.
The person who is on the other side of a tall mountain,
To whom I must hike to meet them halfway at the top,
On an often-uneasy trail
Paved with compromises
And with commitments that I make to them
Equal to those they make to me.
The person who tells me not to do a foolish, audacious thing,
Because we made plans with and promises to each other
That must be kept.
A partner who is the lighthouse that pierces the storm.
Who always shows me the way home.
And to whom I’ll always return.
