Rejoice!
By fortune, two lovers found a way to forget
That memory of misery
Of them, stranded in insatiable love,
Seeking peace in each other’s embrace
But there unfound despite their desperate wishes.
Now they have a solution
Imperfect, but it will do.
They’ll live apart, as their love allows,
But will send small pieces of themselves,
Slivers and shards,
Particles of a person,
For the other to imbibe,
As their need determines.
At first they sent photos,
Thoughtfully chosen with much care.
She in a pose demure, but strong,
The one he always conjured in his dreams of her.
A real woman.
He in the same stance as she most fondly remembered him,
Evincing stern resolve and deep tenderness.
A true man.
But those photos were quickly thrown away.
Why waste for eyes, they realized,
What the mind can see much better?
Then they sent trinkets to one another.
He, to her, a pen –
The one which fit so well his hand.
The one which made him feel home –
Like she did.
Her, to him, a sock –
The one which made her laugh.
The one which made her feel safe –
Like he did.
But those were thrown away, as well.
No things, they both agreed, could encapsulate them –
And maybe that’s a good thing.
Finally they sent their words,
Written on random mediums,
Which they chose with few thoughts –
Those they saved for when thinking of each other.
First, to him, on an envelope
Wrapped in a piece of paper, she wrote:
‘Letters, when compiled in a fashion
We’ve been trained to recognize,
Make words.
Words
Can be easily copied,
Leaving their sentiment to fade.
So I made these new words for you:
Thu whirld ez betor kus eur en et.’
In reply, to her, on toilet paper, he wrote:
‘Thanks.’
Rejoice!
